Living Movement is an art form emerging from eurythmy. At the beginning of the 20th Century eurythmy belonged to the Avant Garde of dance in Europe. Its classical style was developed between 1912 and 1925 and quickly became established. However it has immense uncovered dimensions waiting to be developed. Living Movement is a beginning of the realisation of such possibilities.

Living Movement uses life energy as a source of movement and in doing so is able to access the body-mind connection well known in the contemporary dance world. Voice, live music and singing provide a wellspring for a diverse vocabulary of movement. Working with theatre unfolds the potential of expression. Cultivating the skills of play helps to build a foundation for artistic creativity and is an essential part of Living Movement. Many different artistic concepts are found in Living Movement, a cross-over contemporary art form.

Various techniques are used to attain movement which, on the one hand, is liberated from the body, and on the other, becomes sensitive to the human energy field. A sophisticated yet subtle training of the body provides support for the development of these capacities.

The students of the Academy of Living Movement will be encouraged to develop their own, independent abilities as creative artists. So that on completing their studies, they will stand out as imaginative, flexible, individuals fully in possession of their creative faculties, always seeking original ways and forms for their art to realise itself through them.

There are three principles which will be reflected in the daily work of the Academy Education and Practise, Co-operative Creation, Presentation/Performance. These express the need to tread the path between artistic technique, and creating out of oneself i.e. trusting one’s one artistic capacities, starting from the zero point.

Education and Practise – Like all arts eurythmy has methods that must be learned and practised, so that the student comes to know them through and through. These must become second nature, there without having to think about them, skills that can be called upon and developed. Along with this are other performance skills (voice, mask, contemporary dance etc), and fundamental practical skills to be able to realise ones aims (how to promote oneself, a show; budgeting and funding, etc).

Co-operative Creation - The ability to create together, to understand how we can inspire and help each other in creating together.

Presentation/Performance - Communicating with the audience and being communicated to - the ability to observe and actively make use of what you see. Discovering how to give, and receive constructive feedback.

Subjects including art, art observation, aesthetics and philosophy are also included in the curriculum of the academy with the aim to facilitate the development of intelligent creative practitioners.

The academy will draw its main teachers from experienced artists, who have been working throughout Europe over the last twenty years and more: Philip Beaven, Hans Fors, Marianne Kleiser-Fors, Brigitte Reepmaker, Ernst Reepmaker. Guest teachers will include amongst others: Alexander Seeger, Tobias Richter, Stefan Lenz, Rob Barendsma, Melaine MacDonald, Stefan Albrecht. These individuals all find themselves in search of new movement qualities and artistic innovation, which will be reflected in their teaching methods.

Like the work of these colleagues, the Academy of Living Movement aims to build a tradition of excellence and innovation in the movement arts.
